A masterpiece called “Amu” and behind the eternity –
Notes on the Berlin Film Festival 2005

„I found only two fiction films which I could appreciate. The first one is called ‘Krišana’ (‘Fallen’) shot in Latvia and made by German filmmaker Fred Kelemen. Filmed in black and white it deals in another kind like ‘Amu’ with identity or the loss if it. A man witnesses a suicide of a young woman. Later he tries to reconstruct her life with the help of a few things he found in her hand bag. What he can’t reconstruct he completes with his imagination. More and more he is obsessed by her story (or the story he imagines) which gives him as well an idea of his own loneliness. There is a strange analogy between the man who seems to be totally isolated and the strange situation of the public in a film theatre who has to fill up a lot with own imagination. And this imagination is probably one of the most important elements of cinema. To watch a film like ‘Fallen’ means to live for 90 minutes in a strange situation between being awake and dreaming.”
